Proofread Better With Ginger

The English language really stinks sometimes. It just does. There are too many rules to keep up with, and all of these rules have exceptions. American adults have been diligently learning the English language since grade school, and yet most people make simple spelling and grammatical mistakes every day. While no ill will will befall upon someone for misspelling a word in a Tweet or using thing the word “we’re” when they really should be using “were” in a Facebook status update, serious ramifications can take place if spelling and grammatical errors find their way into the professional world. Maybe, just maybe, you can get away with a spelling or grammatical error if writing is not in your job description. But if it is and you slip up, you are done. Bye-bye. No job for you.

Enter Ginger. This new program is so much more than your average proofreader. Ginger is your one-stop destination for all of the proofreading needs a young writing professional requires: a spelling and grammar checker, sentence rephraser, translator, dictionary, text reader, and personal grammar trainer just to keep you in shape.

Proofread better with Ginger.Spell check is a helpful tool, but it does not cover everything. It does not catch words that are spelled correctly but do not belong in a sentence. Ginger knows. It knows the difference between “turning the light of” and “turning the light off.” Little catches like these can be the difference between a great article and an earful from your boss.

The sentence rephrasing tool is a nifty little gadget that can shake up your sentences. Need to change your sentence from passive voice to active voice? Got it. Want a more descriptive adjective to give your thought more color? Done. Need a well-placed idiom to drive the point home? Ginger has you covered. This little feature is the way to bring your content level up just enough to stand out from the crowd.

The translator, dictionary, text reader, and personal grammar trainer are all handy tools alone, but Ginger’s uniqueness is that it brings them all together in one place. This comes in especially handy on mobile devices. Instead of having to download four or five apps on your phone or tablet, you can find all of these services in one centralized app.

The daily grind for a writer is just that-a grind. Anything that can help make the job easier should be embraced and celebrated. That’s why Ginger is taking off.

The Most Influential American of All Time

When the question, “Who is the most the influential American of all time?” comes up, you are bound to get many different types of responses. Philanthropists and do-gooders like Bill Gates are quick to come up. Billionaires, such as Donald Trump or Mark Zuckerberg are also mentioned. Others will suggest Political figures, such as George Washington or Franklin D. Roosevelt. Inventors such as Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell can also be prime candidates.

What if the answer to that question was not only not an American, but even someone who died two centuries before the Declaration of Independence was signed?

If you think about it, you might realize that Martin Luther, the father of the Protestant Reformation, had a profound effect on American society. While yes, he was not an American, he was responsible for one of the United States’ most significant-and sometimes controversial-freedoms: the separation of church and state.

Martin Luther

In pre-Reformation Germany, the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope had political power that equaled (and sometimes exceeded) that of the German government. Once the Protestant Reformation gained the support of the local German princes, they were able to break off from the Roman Catholic Church and started a gradual trend that saw the Pope’s political power decrease significantly. The Protestant Reformation also had some influence with the Anglican Church separating from Rome, further diminishing the power of the Pope. Even later on, Luther’s teachings had roots in the Puritan movement, which led to the settling of the United States (see how this all ties in together?).

So whether you are religious or not, you do not have to worry about what the United States government thinks about it. You will also never have to worry about religious persecution from the Feds. You can thank Martin Luther for this freedom.

How’s that for influence?

The Mustang Band Welcomes Back Football Season

The Mustang Band Welcomes Back Football Season

The Mustang Band is back! After a long summer of anticipation, we were more than thrilled for the return of the football season at SMU.

The 2014-2015 sports year for the Mustangs did not go exactly as planned. The football team slightly underachieved, and while the men’s basketball team reached historic heights and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1993 under Hall of Fame Coach Larry Brown, the season did not end the on a high note. We’re still a little bit bitter. Moving on.

During the offseason, the Mustangs turned some heads with the hiring of former Clemson Offensive Coordinator Chad Morris. Morris’ energy and dedication to turning the program around created a lot of buzz on and around campus. Paired with a home game against Baylor, the #4 ranked team in the nation, the excitement for the arrival of football season was palpable. After an afternoon on the Boulevard, we were ready to go!

Baylor was as good as advertised, scoring the first touchdown of the day in just 50 seconds. Groans erupted from across the stadium. It appeared that Mustang Nation was in store for another long season.

Enter Chad Morris’ offense.

On SMU’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Matt Davis threw a beautiful bomb to Courtland Sutton to tie the game.

Mass hysteria overtook Ford Stadium. Students jumped and screamed. Baylor fans stood in stunned silence. Dogs befriended the feral cats. We played something that remotely resembled Peruna. Wow.

The remainder of the first half was arguably the most entertaining half of a football game that SMU has seen over the last five years, with the Mustangs trailing by only one touchdown.

After 30 minutes of hard-fought football (and one head-scratching time management mistake) by the Mustangs, we came to our favorite part of the game (no offense to Chad and co.), halftime!

The team fought valiantly during the second half, but Baylor’s depth proved to be too much for the new-look Mustangs. We performed our post-game concert and departed with a loss to Baylor, just like last year.

However, while the outcome was the same, it felt distinctively different. Our team showed heart, and that was refreshing to see. Chad Morris has a bright future on the Hilltop, and we, The Hub of SMU Spirit, are excited to support him and the team every step of the way.

Pony Up.
